This guide is meant to be a simplified explanation of how the laws of physics differ in Kosmosis from real life, and how these changes affect life and technology. It uses the trope Minovsky Physics, meaning that these changes may be completely fictional but still have properties that are well-defined and rigidly adhered-to. Similar cases are found in such works as Mass Effect, Gundam, and many of Larry Niven's books.

The One Big Lie of our Kosmosis universe is the exotic particle, or exoparticle. These particles are obviously made from exotic matter, but only possess certain strange qualities. The very general name "exoparticle" is technically both a layman's and interspecies term, as each sentient and sapient race which knows of the particle has at least one specific name for it depending on their number of languages. The effects, related phenomena, and technology associated with exoparticles will be discussed below.

While gravity generators and such may render a good portion of its points moot, this page and the other works of that site are still an invaluable resource for creating sci-fi scenarios with realism. I strongly urge you to read through at least that one page on common misconceptions if you want to know about how space works.

HYPERSPACE
Hyperspace can be best described to the average person as a "corresponding dimension" to our own universe, but the exact definition would take up an entire series of essays. Hyperspace has many strange but often-beneficial properties, including the fact that although time and the locations of sufficiently massive objects (more on that later) are in precise sync with normal space, quarks and particles made up of them such as baryons (which form familiar particles like protons and neutrons) appear to move at astoundingly faster speeds when exposed to it. This is hypothesized to be somehow connected to the fact that quarks apparently do not exist naturally in hyperspace, perhaps being replaced by exoparticles (which of course are not native to normal space). Other particles found in normal space like electrons and photons (i.e. light) are part of hyperspace and seem to exhibit the same properties as we're comfortable with, although the strong presence of exoparticles creates unavoidable interference when attempting experiments.

Objects with sufficiently high mass (estimated at 0.438 Solar masses) will inevitably have sufficiently high gravity wells, and this ties in to hyperspace's connection with gravity. Such gravitational concentrations will, in layman's terms, project "mass shadows" into hyperspace. These projections at their core are perfectly spherical, roughly match the size of their counterpart objects, and glow white in all spectrums including those as high as cosmic rays to some extent, making study dangerous. Starships must be very careful to avoid such projections and their gravity fields when plotting courses, as one wrong move could jar the ship off course or even smash into a projection. There exists no shortage of nicknames for hyperspace projections.

The presence of exoparticle matter has extremely bizarre and sometimes inexplicable effects when exposed to quark-based particles in large quantities. The most common effect is simple conversion of protons and such into exoparticles, but the exact manner in which this occurs varies extremely. A starship without hypershields could instantly vanish or be slowly eroded away into glittering streams of exotic matter. Hyperspace can look quite beautiful but many health organizations advocate refraining from staring at it for too long, the constantly shifting patterns sometimes creating a negative mesmerizing effect in certain individuals. A handful of species will suffer from serious mental disorders just by looking at hyperspace, so precautions must always be taken to ensure the safety of crew.

The final and undoubtedly most absolutely baffling quality of hyperspace is its ability to absorb heat and somehow bypass the first law of thermodynamics. One explanation is that this somehow makes it also bypass the second law, and hyperspace possesses a "reverse entropy" nature. Whatever the case, this effect is highly beneficial as the absorption of heat to parts and purposes unknown makes possible both starships without cumbersome heat radiators and planet-spanning ecumenopolises (provided, of course, that you can efficiently generate enough food to satisfy the enormous population first!). While the absence of heat radiators is a godsend to the military commander, the mystifying physics displayed have frustrated physicists to no end ever since kratair vessels set off into hyperspace over 10 millennia ago. Nowadays a popular joke is to refer to heat absorbed by hyperspace in a very similar manner as one would humorously talk of division by zero. Naturally, even vessels with the most cutting-edge hypershields must still drop out into normal space every now and then to avoid its crew turning into popsicles.

HYPERDRIVES & HYPERSHIELDS
First developed by kratairian scientists and later independently discovered by nauceans, the hyperdrive is the most commonly used form of "FTL" interstellar travel. While ubiquitous and also relatively cheap in most places, this astonishing technology does have its drawbacks. A hyperdrive must be mounted close to a ship's surface in order to take effect, so military vessel design must be strategic to avoid their means of transport becoming easy targets. Though it is found in many different shapes and designs by species, the basic principles remain the same. An intricate and delicate matrix of particle accelerators and exometal creates a wormhole large enough for a ship to fit through and closes it when hyperspace is entered. Ancient models often were not able to close the wormhole, leaving exoparticles to bombard whatever surrounded the rift.

Hypershields are essentially gravity generators. Simple but effective, they project a thin field of antigravity around a starship while in hyperspace, which protects vehicles and beings from the adverse effects of the abnormal universe. This technology revolutionized space travel and opened it up beyond expensive exploration to common people, not to mention commercialization in many cases. Later on, methods were discovered that allowed the wormhole a vessel enters and exits to be ringed with hypershields, allowing for maximum safety and extremely lower risks of cancer for observers.

Coming up next: Exometal, warp drives, dark things, and micro-wormholes!

Comment while you still can, foolish mortal!

Excellent work so far.

Love it.   Smiley

Should I submit this to the discussion thread after the current discussion has passed?

Wouldn't want to get this neat thread cluttered by the inevitable technical debates. Plus, that way we could officially pin this up in the Getting Started section.   Smiley

In any case, moar plz.  :3

"That bastard is watching that **** playing with a ****" should actually be a perfectly polite sentence to describe a child watching a dog play with some sticks. But it's not, because they somehow became offensive.

Interesting!
Good thing the Photos use warp drives!

Hm, I thought only goonals, vykusi and milika had that. Oh well.

Updated with hyperdrives and hypershields! Geez, why's everything in that universe so hyper? Did everyone there ascend by eating way too much sugar?

Mmm... cancer...

The whole thing reminds me of the... Kyoto Protocol, was it?
