Membrane Blades vs. Impulse Blades
Membrane weapons are a weapon (usually a cutting, slicing one like a sword or knife), that are surrounded by a thin membrane of Plasma, as the name would imply. These increase the weapon's striking power with the increased damage and cutting of the heated plasma surrounding the weapon's striking edge(s). They're a fairly simple weapon to build and reliable, provided proper, regular maintenance. Impulse Blades are more complicated weapons that have no true 'striking edge'. Rather, they have a framework through which a bolt of plasma is passed by a magnetic impulse drive; this plasma is spun around the framework at several hundred thousand revolutions per second; the effect this gives is a sawing motion, as well as the force from the actual swing of the weapon. They are somewhat complex to manufacture (several times more than Membrane weapons), and require meticulous maintenance to keep proper function, and as such they are reserved for officers or more elite forces where they have the best use. Granted that description is a bit tat, it can be better shown with a picture. I'll work on that. EDIT: Stupid slash mark!
